{"id":1145,"date":"2013-09-16T21:46:25","date_gmt":"2013-09-16T21:46:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.nuclearphilosophy.org\/?p=1145"},"modified":"2013-09-16T21:49:01","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T21:49:01","slug":"irrational-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.nuclearphilosophy.org\/?p=1145","title":{"rendered":"Irrational economics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I was impressed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/jeff-schweitzer\/nuclear-energy-survives-o_b_3882434.html\" target=\"_blank\">this short piece<\/a> on HuffPo today.<\/p>\n<p>Former White House policy analyst,\u00a0Jeff Schweitzer,\u00a0speaks\u00a0the truth about the irrational costs of nuclear energy, and highlights our propensity to underestimate high-consequnce, low-pobability failures like Fukushima.<\/p>\n<p>To wit:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c&#8230; nuclear energy is not viable and never will be; low probability high consequence risk. While bad events are rare, when\u00a0they happen, the political, economic and human costs are much too high for society to absorb, even amortized over long\u00a0periods of stability. And this does not include the problem of disposing of nuclear waste or the life cycle costs of\u00a0decommissioning a spent plant. Nuclear energy sounds good, but only if most of the true costs are externalized. Trapping\u00a0the true cost of nuclear energy in the price of electricity would render the industry useless.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUnfortunately, the industry survives because we fail to evaluate properly low-probably high-consequence events. Nuclear\u00a0power is with us only because we have inherent flaws in our ability to evaluate risk.
